CALIBRATION:
The set of operations which establish, under specified conditions, the relationship
between values indicated by a measuring instrument..., and the corresponding known values
of a measurand. (from ISO Guide 25, 'definitions')
Many quality systems require that calibrated or certified (the terms are often used interchangeably) thermometers,
hydrometers or other devices be used where precise measurements are of critical
importance, and/or to verify or calibrate the instruments used routinely in the
laboratory.
